Holiday safety tips

As we head into the holiday season, we want to make sure you are avoiding pitfalls of cyber crime that can be more common during the holidays with extra shopping and so many more distractions!

Check your devices: Use strong passwords of at least 15 characters, update your software, and turn on multi-factor authentication. Password managers like Bitwarden are a great way to make sure you have strong, complex passwords.

When you fly: Do not use the USB charging ports at the airport. You can plug into an outlet using a charger, but do not plug directly into a USB port.

Shop Smart and Secure: Use only reputable websites that you know and trust. Type the URL directly into your browser instead of clicking on links in emails or ads, especially for unfamiliar retailers.

Recognize phishing scams: Don’t click links or download attachments unless you’re confident where they came from.

Verify Unfamiliar Retailers: Some cyber attackers may try to trick consumers by creating malicious websites that appear to be legitimate. For unfamiliar retailers, review customer feedback and verify the legitimacy of contact information, such as a physical address and support number.

Email verification: Double check senders’ email addresses and be wary of requests for personal information. Never provide your password, personal or financial information in response to an unsolicited email or phone call.

Use safe methods for purchases: Never provide financial information when using public Wi-Fi.

Check accounts frequently: Keep an eye on your bank and credit card statements to make sure there’s no suspicious activity.
