What is a SIEM?
Cybersecurity today depends on a multifaceted approach and a critical tool in our toolbox is a SIEM. Security Information and Event Management, (SIEM for short), is a solution that helps detect, analyze, and respond to security threats before they harm business operations.
Part of how a SIEM does its job is with real-time monitoring by a SOC team (SOC is a security operations center) The SOC team watches the network, servers and 365 for anomalous behavior and it can recognize if something seems out of the ordinary in your environment. Most of the alerts are handled by the SOC team before they are escalated to i2m for any additional review. Most of this happens in the background, without you and your organization having to worry!
Another function of the SIEM is it keeps audit logs, so if something does happen, you can figure out how and why. It is great for insurance and security audits.
Unfortunately, threats are ever-evolving, so our approach needs to be as dynamic as bad actors are. The cost of inaction is high, but luckily there are solutions like SIEM that you can add to your security stack and increase your peace of mind.
