Hotel Wi-Fi Threats Put Microsoft 365 Accounts at Risk

Since May 2026 there has been a surge of DNS poisoning attacks targeting M365. These incidents have become so frequent that Microsoft had to issue a security bulletin. In one such attack recently, hackers found ways to take over parts of a hotel’s Wi-Fi system and, using DNS poisoning, send guests to a fake Microsoft 365 sign-in page that looks real. Once on the fake page, if you enter a password or approve an unfamiliar sign-in request, the attacker can gain access to company email, files, and other sensitive information—even when multifactor authentication is turned on.

These attacks may also use fake browser or computer update messages to trick people into installing harmful software. Once installed, that software can quietly record keystrokes, take screenshots, copy saved information, steal files, or capture an active Microsoft 365 login. A good rule is to be suspicious of any unexpected sign-in, verification, or update message that appears right after connecting to public Wi-Fi. Do not ignore browser security warnings, and never copy and run commands from an unfamiliar pop-up.

The safest option is to use a trusted mobile hotspot, an approved company VPN or a dedicated Secure Internet Access VPN when working away from the office. Keep your computer, browser, and security software updated, and contact i2m if anything about a public network or sign-in request seems unusual. If you entered your password, approved a request you did not recognize, installed an unexpected update, or clicked past a security warning, disconnect from the network and call i2m right away.

We do many things in the background to protect you from bad actors, but you are the first line of defense. A call to us as soon as something seems suspicious is always better than waiting to find out!

Recently i2m launched a System Status site where you can quickly check the status of services you rely on, including Microsoft 365, AWS and Azure.

This status page gives us an alternate way to keep you informed if email or other services are affected.

On this site we will post updates about major cloud service outages, regional internet disruptions and any other events that may impact systems you rely on.

Our goal is to provide a single place where you can quickly check for updates and stay informed during service interruptions. You can click the button on the right to open the page and we recommend you bookmark the page for easy future access.
