RaaS and the evolving threat landscape
Ransomware as a Service (RaaS) is a relatively new phenomenon where bad actors with no technical knowledge are able to find ready-made ransomware kits on the dark web. This expands the potential for ransomware attacks to come from people who have no skill or experience in cyberattacks. Kits can range from $40 per month to thousands of dollars, making them very accessible to any bad actor with a little money and bad intentions.
As with any ransomware attack, the best course of action is to prevent it in the first place. Since attackers most commonly take advantage of poor credential hygiene, making sure your passwords are complex and stored safely is critically important. Bitwarden is a password manager that creates and stores complex passwords in your own vault that can be accessed with a single master password. It is free to setup and it is the tool i2m uses internally.
Another excellent way to protect your company from these types of attacks is endpoint protection. For this, i2m recommends Threatlocker, which is designed to prevent zero-day attacks by operating from a zero-trust policy.
A zero-day attack is one that has not yet been encountered, meaning that tools designed around existing and known threats may not be sufficient. Threatlocker works by establishing a baseline of safe behavior in your digital environment and then blocking anything outside of that baseline. This is one of our best tools in preventing bad actors from accessing your data.
